In the past, the “featured article” was only available to WordPress users who were willing to pay for their templates. Not anymore: there are several templates currently available for free that come with the “featured article” utility.
If you feel confident playing with coding yourself, you can try this solution, which is meant to work with the popular default Kubrik template, but could probably be tweaked to work with any similar template. This hack keeps the “featured” article at the top of your posts list, so it’s the first post your readers will see.
My current favorite website providing some great “advanced” WordPress designs is mandarinmusing.com. I like the elegance of the back-end functionality, and the clean impact of the presentation. I like these templates so much that I have adopted one for this page, and plan to use it as is.
